Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone
Published on Wednesday, 31 March 2021
On 1 June 2021 Birmingham City Council will launch a Clean Air Zone in a bid to tackle air pollution in the city.
Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone will cover all roads within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road, but not the Middleway itself.
No vehicle will be banned, but the most polluting vehicles will have to pay a daily charge to travel within the area (approximately one in four).
Euro 4 Petrol (most vehicles from 2006 onwards), Euro 6 Diesel (most vehicles from September 2015 onwards), Euro 6 Gas, fully electric or hydrogen fuel cell, hybrid electric (petrol/diesel engine must meet the relevant criteria) are all compliant and will not be charged.
You can go online and enter your registration number to check if your vehicle(s) will be charged.
Charges will be £8 per day for cars / LGVs and £50 per day for coaches / HGVs. The onus will be on the driver to know they have entered the Zone; they will not receive a text or letter.
Birmingham City Council will be hosting a business clinic on Wednesday 28 April for SMEs (Small to Medium-sized Enterprises) across the West Midlands to find out more and ask questions. You can register for the clinic here.
Financial incentives are available to SMEs based in the West Midlands with coaches or Heavy Goods Vehicles that regularly conduct commercial operations within the Clean Air Zone.
