Why did you become an Enterprise Adviser?

Whilst working for NSL in Solihull I looked for areas I could get involved more with the community and joined one of the local forums. As I lived and worked in the area, I thought this would be a good thing to do. I met a lot of contacts over this time, including Hannah who spoke to me about the role of Enterprise Adviser. This was back in the Summer of 2016. Working in business, I didn’t feel like education necessarily prepared students for entering the world of work. I wanted to help change this in what ever small-scale way I could. I was quickly paired with a school and met the Assistant Head. She was so passionate about wanting to give her pupils the knowledge, skills and behaviours to be successful, I was sold on the role.

What do you enjoy most in your role as an Enterprise Adviser?

Simple, meeting the children. I have conducted a number of mock interview days at the school and these are fantastic. I have taken several of my colleagues with me and we never fail but to leave inspired. Press reports and social media only ever talk down about the “youth of today”. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Overview of your chosen career or career pathway to your current role.

I attended College and the University of Central Lancashire where I studied business. Whilst studying I started a part time job in the pub trade and worked my way up to the Licensee across four years. Since 2006 I have worked for NSL. Who are NSL? We are an outsourcing service provider working with Local and Central Government as well as private Businesses. I cover the “middle” of the Country from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire in the North down to Gloucestershire and everything in between. I look after around 300 colleagues working on behalf of 8 Councils. We provide a number of services, mainly based around Parking and Transport, including Enforcement, Back Office Processing, Car Park Management, Permitting and Event Management. In Solihull I have sat as a non-executive board member for Safer Solihull, as well as acted as an Enterprise Adviser.
