Seizing opportunity with training

When we first met Nathan at Solihull Recruitment and Training Centre, he was looking for work or training after being out of work for a few months. With the great demand for workforce in the Construction industry, we recommended the Kingshurst Construction Training Hub to him.

Nathan recounts: “I was interested in the qualification for becoming a dumper driver. I briefly worked on a construction site before but it was with a small scale developer. I did not know that there are free training courses that can help me get the qualifications for other roles onsite. I signed up for the course right away.”

Nathan loved the course and learned a lot about the industry. After several weeks of training, he took the exams and passed with flying colours. Nathan comments: “I was surprised by the qualifications that this course has led to. I have got 6 certificates now including CSCS and CPCS card. My tutor was very supportive and always willing to give me advice.”

Just when Nathan felt confident to start his job search for working onsite, he got a surprise from his tutor. The training provider, RMF, was amazed by his determination and communication skills and offered him a job as a tutor. Nathan is taking some more courses to get ready for this new role to pass on his newfound skills to learners in prisons.

Nathan recounts: “When I signed up for the course, I just wanted to get some certificates and hopefully get a job in the construction industry.  I have never thought that I would become a tutor! I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome really.

“I am excited about the future. This job will enable me to not only provide for my family, but also give back to the community. Everyone makes mistakes in life, big and small. Everyone deserves a second chance and support to become a better person. I hope that I will be able to teach them some new skills that will benefit them for life. It will also help them get a job after they have served their sentence.”

Nathan continues: “I’d encourage anyone, who has maybe thought about getting into construction but wasn’t sure where to start, to take a look at the Kingshurst Construction Training Hub.”
